CONSTANCE SWANIKER, renowned Ghanaian sculptor continues to make giant strides in the arts industry as her craft works attracts more international recognition.

Also a celebrated entrepreneur, Constance’s innovative sculpturing, which creates a unique combination of wrought iron, wood, cane and glass, has gained international reputation.

In recognition of her remarkable output, Constance was chosen to represent Sub- Saharan African region at a global art exhibition at UNESCO to mark International Women’s Day from March 6 to 13.

Constance 9At the exhibition, Constance showcased eight thought-provoking pieces highlighting issues that have had an impact on her life, environment and community.

UNESCO described her performance and works which won the admiration of many visitors, as “a stellar example of how a passion can be turned into a successful livelihood.”

Ms. Swaniker comes from a very diverse background having lived in Ghana, The Gambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. She studied her craft at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and is a successful entrepreneur and managing director of her own metal work company, Accents and Arts in Accra, Ghana.

Her works are found in upscale hotels, offices, diplomatic missions and private homes around the world.

She has won many accolades and awards including “Outstanding Industrial Metal Furniture Firm in Ghana Award” by wAi Africa, The Network Journal Africa Under Forty 2010 Achievement Award, Best Entrepreneur SME Innovation Award 2010, VLISCO Be Your Dream Award -2013, Metal Product of the Year 2013 and Regional & Country Winner, Africa’s Most Influential Women in Leadership and Governance-2014 by CEO magazine South Africa.

Ms Swaniker’s atelier, located in Bubiashie, a suburb of Accra, has been the origin of many innovative works that are loved by many.

“My team strives to realize clients’ aspirations using a unique combination of exotic woods, wrought iron, cane and glass with an emphasis on exclusivity”, Constance said.

She has been sculpturing for the past 14 years offering a combination of imagination, millenary and craftsmanship for her company to become Ghana’s premier purveyor of metal art producing designer fences, gates, chandeliers, mirrors holders, Balustrades and sculptures, among others.

She explained that her objective was to offer unique design solutions which complement both traditional and contemporary living, allowing people to compliment their home or office space with exquisite splendor at affordable cost.

“We don’t provide our clients with just furnishing, but rather a delightful sense of elegance and a reassurance of fine workmanship,” she says.

According to her, her passion has been reinforced by what she described as a “creative exploration towards satisfying the very real Ghanaian appetite for quality, yet affordable practical home and office furnishing.”

In spite of her growing international status, Constance and her company have remained supportive of the Bubiashie community, as a result of which she was presented with a community service award in 2013 by the chief of the area, Nii Ashie Komowuo for bringing economic regeneration to the area and giving new skills and jobs to the unemployed youth.

A dedicated mother of two boys, Constance aspires to being a role model for women and inspiring the youth to live their dreams no matter the challenges.
