The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly, Ms. Rita Odoley Sowah, has lauded the organisation of the Millennium Marathon held in the municipality with the view that it was a promotional tool to the municipality.
She said the event which saw people from all walks of life, far and near and different races visiting to participate in the marathon which saw participants run their way through the municipality was a promotional activity enough to sell the district and its potentials to the outside world.
Ms. Sowah said though the event was the first of its kind, the magnitude of patronage was very impressive and overwhelming which is enough indication that there was good publicity for the event and Ghanaians and other nationals were ready to run and exercise themselves for physical fitness.
Ms. Sowah made the comment when she spoke as one of the special guests of honour who graced the occasion before the start of the marathon.
She said the coming to stay of the event would be a good platform for Ghanaians to exercise for fitness which means most people would be compelled to be training towards the event which would automatically ensure fitness and good health of the masses which would also translate into productivity and efficiency at work.
The event, she said, once held in the same month as the Milo marathon would mean that the month of September would be declared as fitness month for which people of all walks of life, athletes and other nationals would be training and gearing up to participate for fitness and the ultimate prizes.
She encouraged Ghanaians-especially residents in the municipality to endeavour to participate in the athletic event each year, adding that the holding of the event was an opportunity for the athletic youth to demonstrate their sporting prowess for honours and fitness.
She therefore urged residents to always make it a point to maintain good sanitation practices as the municipality was the centre of parastatal institutions and preffered choice for staging many national and international events saying that the assembly would also leave no stone unturned to clamp down on recalcitrant persons who flout sanitation laws to the disrepute of the municipality.
The 21-kilometre marathon under the theme “Run the change in you”, was won by Ethiopia’s Terefa Debella Delesa and Gebiqhosh Aeyle Inem who clinched the men’s and women’s title respectively.
