“If you love Me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.” – John 14:15-17 (NIV)

We started with the personality of the Holy Spirit last week and said that He experiences all the sinless elements involved within a divine personality as seen in the Father and the Son.

We ended by saying that the Holy Spirit is called God as we read in Acts 5:3-4 “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

We continue with our study of The Holy Spirit this week as follows:

.

  1. HE IS MADE EQUAL WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON

While the Holy Spirit does indeed occupy a place of submission in the Trinity, He is nevertheless not at all behind the Father or Son in all their divine attributes. His perfect equality with the Father and Son is demonstrated through the following New Testament examples:

  1. AS SEEN IN THE BAPTISMAL EXPERIENCE OF CHRIST

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” – Matt. 3:16-17

  1. AS SEEN IN THE TEMPTATION OF CHRIST

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” – Matt. 4:1-7

  1. AS DECLARED BY JESUS IN THE UPPER ROOM

“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever.” – John 14:16 “ But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” – John 14:26. “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—He will testify about Me.” – John 15:26

  1. AS DECLARED BY PAUL

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” – 2 Cor. 13:14” “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering And so he condemned sin in the flesh,” – Rom. 8:2-3

  1. AS DECLARED BY PETER

“… who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.” – 1 Peter. 1:2 “ If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” – 1 Peter 4:14

  1. AS DECLARED IN THE BOOK OF ACTS

Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.” – Acts 2:33

  1. AS DECLARED BY JESUS ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matt. 28:19-20

III         THE NAMES AND TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Often in the Scripture one may learn much about someone simply by studying the

names and titles given to that person. So it is with the Holy Spirit. The thirteen (13)

titles ascribed to Him provide much insight into His true nature. He is called:

  1. THE SPIRIT OF GOD

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.” – 1 Cor. 3:16

  1. THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST

“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.” – Rom. 8:9

  1. THE ETERNAL SPIRIT

“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” – Heb. 9:14

  1. THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

“ But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” – John 16:13

  1. THE SPIRIT OF GRACE

“How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?” – Heb. 10:29

  1. THE SPIRIT OF GLORY

“ If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” – 1 Peter 4:14

  1. THE SPIRIT OF LIFE

“because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” – Rom. 8:2

  1. THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND REVELATION

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.” – Eph.1:17

  1. THE COMFORTER

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” – John 14:26 (KJV)

  1. THE SPIRIT OF PROMISE

On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 1:4-5

  1. THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, “Abba Father.” – Rom. 8:15

  1. THE SPIRIT OF HOLINESS

“ and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Rom. 1: 4

  1. THE SPIRIT OF FAITH

It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.”Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak,”- 2 Cor. 4:13
